12. The Indus Whirl of lokapuran of the omniscients
All the souls after having risen to the 13th level counter their ghati or destructive karmas but are not Tirthankaras; hence they are called as the kewalis or the omniscients. Some kewalis adopt the very special process of samudghat with lokapuran to equate their remaining three aghati or non-destructive karmas with ayu (life-span determining karma), to end them all at once prior to achieving salvation. In this process the soul, in advance of finally leaving the body for ever, expands itself vertically like a rod along the total height and depth of the Universe (triloka) in an instant, then it flattens self like a door, then expands into a sheetcovering the whole width of the universe, at once taking the form of
a whirl at the same time burning the three karmas of gotra or family, nama, i.e. name, identity, and vedaniya or suffering/feeling to equate them all according to ayu or life-span karma in four samayas. The soul then immediately takes the reverse course, in the reverse sequence, so that at a moment finally all the karmas come to end before salvation. The first seal below shows on its one side an ascetic holding spear signifying his observance of self restriction and the other sign of chaturaradhana (ratnatraya + tapachar).
The back side shows the phenomenon of the kewali’s Samudghat, i.e. the processes of Dand with steps of Kapat and Pratar , and finally the Lokapuran whirl in one direction , next the completion of the process with a reverse whirl – hence three symbols in short. The other seals show a whirl as symbol for the total process of penance with Lokapuran as Samudghat: . One special sign is also visible as a compound symbol of penance with renunciation, attached to sallekhana as a whirl. Only kewalis, omniscients, do this, according to the Jain scriptures.
