Tamas One of the three guṇas – essential attributes or characteristics of manifested beings and things: the quality of darkness, illusion, ignorance. In a different sense Tamas also means passivity, repose, inertia. (See Bh.G. chs. xiv and xviii.) (Bh.G. 41)
