Ego – Th. [I 5, 30, II 7, 17, 19, 32]

The Voice of the Silence distinguishes between the higher Ego (the “Deva-Ego”) – the eternal, permanent source of the individual conscience of man – and the lower ego, the I-self of the fleeting personality.

Eight Dire Miseries – B. [Fragment 3]

Among these calamities or causes of suffering (Pāli: dukkha), four are related to the body (birth, old age, illness, and death), three with the mental state (loss of what one loves, affliction due to what is not desired, the incapacity to get what one desires), and one is connected with the illusionary terrestrial condition (Incarnation in the five Skandhas, or the aggregates forming the personal psycho-physical being).
