Beethoven
Beethoven heard the children Stars at play,
And the first dawn of Music surge along
The abyss; Beethoven heard life’s nascent song
When the Elder Gods intoned the Milky Way,
And anthemed Silence, pealing through the array
Of flameless spheres, awoke them, and they sang;
Beethoven heard the cosmic armour clang
Of heaven and hell, time’s primal battle day.
“Now wilt thou teach Us and the stars to sing,
Enthroned above the zenith midst thy pears?”
–“Nay, yon dark earth sorrows”, Beethoven said.
“Hither go I”. – “Yet feel thou never the sting
Of earth’s discord!” said God; and touched his ears
To immortal peace; and sighed, bowing His head.
